That said, I probably only use the 1073 and Avalon 737sp in Unison, everything else I feel like imparts the flavor of the preamp onto an already recorded track fairly well. The Unison stuff is super cool, and I like the impedance matching so that your mic will sound comparable to what it would sound like with the hardware. The Pultec EQP-1A is a classic and definitely good for top end boosts and the classic "pultec trick" with kicks and subs. The Chandler Curve Bender and Manley Massive Passive are great options for a mixbus/master bus. If you see a sale on the fairchild ones, or get a voucher for a free/discounted plugin with your purchase, I'd steer you in that direction.ĮQ-wise I'd say there's nothing that particularly stands out to me. Not particularly a fan of the 1176, it works fine, but I'd rather use a distressor model or something else that's as fast over an 1176.ĭepending on what bundle they gave you along with your Apollo, (guessing it's the analog classics one) you'll only have the LA-2A and 1176. The LA-2A is fine, some people really hate it because it's not as uniform as the hardware units, but I'm a big fan of it, pretty much lives in my vocal chains. I went with the Old Timer ME because it widened the stereo image slightly without creating gaps like the Overloud or a gross high end like Waves.To me, the Fairchild 670 & 660 are some of the most faithful and easy to use vari-mu style compressors available. This can get really wide, causing big gaps in a diffuse image. The m/s compression is great but it can leave gaps. The oversampling was like the DDMF Magic Death Eye Stereo so again minimum phase and harmful. MJUC narrows the image and brings out the bass a ton.
Old Timer is less "guitar processor" than the Puigtec. This is like a calmer version of Puigchild with better, softer timings.The lows are saturated slightly and the entire background is pushed forward and to the sides. This is dense and pushed at the same time.
There's no m/s compression either, only EQ, so it's not really what I'm looking for. I dig it but it's very modern in a good way. Non-oversampled, this is killer and just makes stuff sound slightly better. You get weird phase shifted cymbals and guitar hash. The oversampling is minimum phase thus unusable on any thing with upper treble. Is the push just audible aliasing?ĭDMF Magic Death Eye Stereo. No distorted guitars and the upper mids are just weird. The m/s compression on this is nice but it doesn't have the widest image. Better than digital pedals but it can be harsh. The attack isn't awful which is rare for a modeled waves plug.
